What is a Cylindrical Lens?

     Like all lenses, this lens focuses light, but it differs in that it focuses the light in a line instead of to a single point as a spherical lens does. The curvature of a Cylindrical lens is sectioned so when the light passes through it is projected onto a line that intersects the surface in a parallel fashion and on a plane tangent. The lens compresses the image so that it is perpendicular to the line and projects the image in a parallel direction. This cylindrical lens is often the solution for people who have ocular astigmatism.
